Postgraduate Orthopaedics in collaboration are proud to announce our sixth International FRCS (Tr&Orth) revision course.

This course offers an intense and comprehensive review of Orthopaedics and is ideally suited to candidates planning to sit:

  • Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination (JSCFE) International FRCS (Tr&Orth) in orthopaedics Dubia, June 2024.
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (JCIE) FRCS(Tr & Orth)
  • Fellowship of The  Hong Kong College of Orthopaedic Surgeons(FHKCOS)

The course has been divided into

  • One day of lectures
  • Two days small group viva teaching
  • One day Mock Viva Examination Preparation(ring the bell)
  • One day I-pad Clinical Examination scenarios

This 6-day course is designed to provide high yield orthopaedic topics and preparation for the International FRCS (Tr&Orth) exam. It is internationally accredited by the RCSEng the only FRCS(TR&Orth) course worldwide with this accolade.
The course  have been significantly redesigned to take into account of the recent FRCS(Tr&Orth) examination changes and also the changing learning methods evolving from the Covid pandemic. There have been changes in the way trainees learn material and want to prepare for this high stake’s examination.  Candidates want fewer formal lectures and more face-to-face small group viva practice.
This  course has always remained face to face not virtual. Our courses are very intense with very long days and would not suit a virtual platform.

Day 1, April 29th, 2024
Lecture presentations.
The lecture programme has been condensed down into one day  covering key topics that are difficult to understand in a virtual format. Previous lectures will be available to view and take notes from. The lectures will be geared towards A list high yield exam topics. The lectures involve some of the more conceptually difficult aspects of the key topics that you need to know for the exam. There is a focus on important A list areas of the syllabus that regularly appear in the FRCS (Tr&Orth) exam.

Day 2 and day 3 April 30th and May 1st 2024
Small group viva practice for the FRCS (Tr&Orth).
Two days of small group viva teaching to the postgraduate orthopaedics course. After the Covid pandemic and changes in the learning environment brought about by virtual webinars we have decided to focus more on group viva teaching of key topics rather than lectures. This will involve a 5-minute work through of an A list viva question with followed by a 5-minute feedback discussion of the topic involving a model answer, how to improve your score, use of buzz words and key sentences. This has received excellent candidate feedback and is the preferred revision method for  candidates for the viva component of the FRCS(Tr&Orth) exam.

Day 4, 2nd May 2024
Short case clinical scenario examination preparation.
Faculty will work through a series of lectures dealing with generic and diagnosis specific cases likely to be asked during both the short case scenario vivas and intermediate clinical examinations. Short case scenario viva coaching is a relatively new introduction into the course and can make a major difference to a candidate performance. Candidate feedback indicated that it made a major difference between passing and failing for some of our international candidates taking the international FRCS(Tr&Orth) exam.
Diagnosis specific will involve detailed explanations of how to examine for a particular condition, what should candidates look for in the clinical pictures, how they would perform a particular test and the significance of a positive test
There is some uncertainty long term about whether the short cases involving patients will be reintroduced. In the meantime, the clinical scenario vivas are likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future.

Day 5, 3rd May 2024
Oral examination viva for the FRCS (Tr&Orth).
The mock viva day format closely mimics the real viva examination with time built in for feedback from experienced faculty. This has had excellent feedback from previous courses and candidates. It’s one of the high lights of the course and famously known by candidates as the “ring the bell” viva day.

Day 6, 4th May 2024
I-pad Clinical Examination scenarios for the FRCS (Tr&Orth).
This will replicate the short case clinical examination I-pad format used for the JSCFE International FRCS (Tr&Orth) exam in Dubai 2024.
The I pad format is also used  by the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (JCIE) for the UK FRCS(Tr & Orth).
I-pad clinical pictures and short video clips  will be shown to candidates in mock exam conditions.
Faculty will be experienced and well versed in this format as one concern with many FRCS(Tr&Orth) faculty is that they do not fully understand this exam format and it quickly degenerates into a viva type examination. We have experienced examiners well versed in how this format is utilised and plays out in the “real” exam.
